Bush Beat

December 2014

We come to that time of year again where we start slowing down, spend time with our loved ones and just try and remove ourselves from the hustle of making a life. A time to have fun, indulge in good food but also to reflect back on one’s successes and failures. One needs to regain sanity and purpose, for me the best way to do that is spending time in nature just watching the natural rhythms and cycles of nature. Sitting on the banks of a lazy African river, watching the sunset over a dusty winter sky with the distant call of a lion or just listening to the sad continuous call of a wood dove, these are those special moments that we as humans need to reconnect us with our living planet. We are drawn from our controlled and restricted alien world to one of patience, unpretentiousness and above all raw beauty.
We as the Amakhosi team have as always strived this past year to help people connect with the natural environment in order to rekindle relations with nature and the ones they love. In 2014 Amakhosi received some unexpected recognition of our achievements in especially the service levels that the staff provided to our guests. We are very proud of our staff and realise yet again that there is no substitution for doing something with love and passion. We have also done a record 3 bush weddings in the year and they all came of perfectly. When out on safari in the fresh air one does work up an appetite, Lauren and her kitchen team is then always ready with a culinary delight to satisfy all palates. Our newly added spa has also proven to be a great addition to the guest experience. Samantha and her team’s magical hands have healed many a stress ridden body and the spa’s infinity pool overlooking the Mkuze River sets a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
We would lastly but most importantly like to thank all our loyal guests, friends and supporters for this past year. We wish everyone a peaceful and joyous Christmas and a prosperous 2015. Hope to see you soon!

Kind regards
Alwyn, Sonja and the Amakhosi team.

Bush News 2014

The bush is a beautiful lush green after good rains a week ago, painted reed frog calls fills the evening air all along the river. The eerie but beautiful call of the Whalberg’s eagle is heard throughout the day, it is also birth season with impala, warthog and wildebeest babies abundant everywhere.

Some species of course give birth throughout the year, in 2014 we have seen 4 new baby elephants, and recently some lion cubs. The guides are yet to see the cubs but the tiny little tracks of 3 or 4 cubs was picked up a couple of days ago, we are all waiting with bated breath for the first appearance and as soon as we can we will certainly share the photos with you. We were also pleasantly surprised a week ago when 4 wild dogs where seen on game drive one morning, they have been seen once or twice since. In Zululand Wild dogs often move freely between parks like Umfolozi, Mkuze and Ithala and it is really special treat to see this highly endangered carnivore in the wild.

Right now it is a time of plenty for the wildlife here at Amakhosi and the guides are taking full advantage of all the diversity to show our guests the wonders of the Zululand bush.
