Another season has come to an end and, with the arrival of Spring, flowers are in full bloom, especially the crimson red of the Weeping Boerbean (schotia brachypetila). Its name is derived from flowers that drip with nectar, giving the tree its weeping appearance. In addition, Amakhosi is seeing the return of their migrant birds. Species include the Yellowbilled Kite and Wahlberg`s Eagle, soaring effortlessly high in the skies. It is with baited breath that we await the seasonal arrival of the European Rollers and Barn Swallows, not to mention the occasional sighting of the African Finfoots. Spring brings new life to the reserve, and we have been pleasantly surprised with a crèche of grey bundles. Baby elephants are learning the ‘tricks of the trade' as they master the use of their trunks. Did you know that it will take these babies almost three years to have full use their trunks? Our biggest blessing has been the birth of four lion cubs to our Wetland Pride. Now 16 weeks old, their new arrival brings along assurance that our two Madikwe boys will be even more settled on the reserve and adapting to their way of life. Our big male leopard has also become well-known, offering regular sightings of him soaking up the sun on the bridge that crosses the Mkuze River. Lastly, and by no means least, the sub-adult ‘Amakhosi Cheetahs' are frequenting new areas, bearing testament to how adaptable they really are. These youngsters are currently at a crucial stage in their lives as they are left out to venture and find their own territories. Whether they will live to adulthood, time will tell. Water levels are currently at their lowest, and we eagerly await the first summer rains. These rains ensure that our amphibian friends come out in force for Amakhosi to start our traditional Frogging Safaris. With the last of the Autumn winds carrying the cold away, it brings the promise of life with a spring in our step, and the glimmer of hope for an exceptional summer season that lies ahead. From one of the most beautiful places on earth. Hope to see you soon. Werner Muller Amakhosi Ranger |
