01 Aug 2005 : RANGER REPORT - WINTER 2005

Rain at last!

Well all the prayers have finally paid off weíve had some fantastic rains this month and of course with rain comes the change we have been eagerly awaiting.

Although we still need more follow up rains, things in the bush are looking spectacular. For the botanist there is a full range of flora in full bloom. The trees have all got a full cover of leaves and some are covered in flowers of pink, yellow, red and blue. The grass cover is looking great and this means that all the range of grazing animals we have on our wonderfully picturesque game reserve are all moving to the places we are used to them being to find food, rather than having to travel far and wide and into the mountains to find grazing. The river is so nice and full and awesome to view as it churns and gurgles past the lodge. An amazing force of nature but still a symbol of tranquillity.

All the mud wallows are in full use. A sight always worth seeing is a family of warthogs squirming around in the mud frantically to get rid of those itches caused by many parasites found in the bush. Rhino, elephant and buffalo are also famous for their wallowing habits in order to reduce body heat and skin irritations. A few great sightings have been had by all sitting at a mud wallow in the afternoon sun watching animals frolic frantically for the last muddy patch available. For the Ornithologists the birding has been fantastic. Sightings of Trogans, Painted Snipe, Pygmy Geese, Osprey, bald Ibis , African Hawk Eagle, Ground hornbill, African Crake, pink throated twin spot, African river duck and Southern banded Snake Eagle are just a few of the more uncommon sightings you may be fortunate enough to have, and who knows you may even be able to tick off a few lifers.

I would also like to add an update on the female cheetah with the four cubs. Sightings have become less frequent since our young mom has started venturing further and further due to her confidence picking up, with the cubs growing nicely. She has managed so far to keep all four cubs safe and all are fit and fat, almost ready to begin hunting with their mother and maybe even help her and earn their keep.

Well folks from us at Amakhosi enjoy your holidays, drive safely and have a truly fantastic festive season and remember you are always warmly welcome to visit us at our paradise.

Best Wishes
Your Rangers Sean, Dean and Greg
